March came in like a lamb but seems to be going out like a lion!  We had a terrific snowstorm here yesterday and got about 18 inches here at the house.  Can’t believe a week ago it was 80°!!!  Colorado weather is so crazy! ;D  It will be in the 50′s this weekend so hopefully it will all melt away but I thought I heard on the news we are going to have another storm on Monday.  Sigh.  Good thing THIS week we were on Spring Break.  Didn’t have to go anywhere in the bad weather!

Corey and the kids went out to shovel the driveway this morning…

Laney gets the most rosy cheeks when she goes out into the cold.  And it was cold!  14°!!!  I know that as a kid this happened to me.  She was so cute when she came in all shivering.

While I was downloading these photos Ava came over to take a look.  She noticed that Laney was in focus and the background was blurry and said as much!  So I started telling her that was a specific setting on my camera that made it do that.  She was very interested!

Working with text can be really fun.  Especially when you use it for design purposes.  Here’s a Photoshop Tutorial about an easy Text Design.

    moab_journaling

    1.  Open a new PS file.  I did mine as an 8 1/2 x 11″ document because I’m going to print it for one of my scrapbooks and that is the size printer I have. ;D

    2.  Create a new layer and draw a text box in whatever size you wish.

    open_text_box

    3.  Take your text and paste it in the text box you just created.  I wrote my text out in Microsoft Word and then cut and pasted it from there.

    paste_text

    4.  Create a new layer and choose the custom shape tool.  Then select whatever shape you wish.

    select_customshape_tool

    5.  With the shape layer selected right click.  In that fly out menu choose Create Clipping Mask.

    create_clippingmask

    6.  When you do that your image should look like this…

    clippingmask_created

Voila!  You have done it!  Easy peasy!  After that I added some other elements to it and the final product looks like this…

    moab_journaling

I printed my out on a transparency and am going to put it as an overlay in the Moab section of my scrapbook.  I’ll try to post about that tomorrow or the next day.

    Questions or comments welcome! ;D

So this week we are going fully manual in Oh Shoot! I’m not sure I’m there yet by any means but…I was happy that I took some shots and at least got a few that were decent.  Maybe I shouldn’t say just how many I took to get any decent ones…he he!  I took the girls to the indoor pool today cause they had a half day at school.  Moving targets aren’t the best for starting out full manual but, hey, this is my life!  So these two were fairly good considering my first time out…no editing what-so-ever…just SOOC (straight out of the camera)!

    laney SOOC

    Ava SOOC

And then…just because I like these photos so much…I’m including two more.  I over exposed them a tiny bit each and so I adjusted them just a little bit in Photoshop…but no effects…just darkened a little. ;D

I also just wanted to say it was very strange and very exciting to go to the pool with the girls today because they are to the point now where they can completely swim…I don’t have to sit on the edge of my seat and watch them every minute…just have to glance here and there.  And they entertained themselves and I was able to take my laptop and do some work.  I never thought we’d get to this point…ever!  They are growing up so fast!!!

I’m still waiting on my replacement lens to show up.  But while I’m waiting I’m using the defective one…it just won’t auto focus.  So not a huge deal if the things I’m photographing aren’t moving to much and I have to keep focusing! ;D  Here are some photos from today.

In case anyone was wondering I’m not the only one getting new things.  Corey has been getting bike parts all winter and is finally done assembling his new mountain bike…

This has got to be the best photo I’ve ever gotten of Baxter sooc…

This photo I did not take…just edited a little in PS…Corey took it with the new Kodak point and shoot I got him for our anniversary.  He and Ava went on a bike ride today so Corey could test out his new bike.  Nice job Honey!  And, yes, he has removed the automatic date thingy in the bottom now.  Phew!

Revisiting the word I have selected for the year…LIVE.

It is okay to live with change and what might be interpreted as failure.  This is always something that comes hard to me.  I am such a creature of habit and high expectation.  We have decided that Ava is going to take a break from gymnastics.  It is getting to be a little too much for her at this time with school.  She is great at it but it doesn’t seem to be adding fun to her life and Corey and I agreed that if we enrolled the girls into extracurricular activities it would always be with the understanding that it would never be pressure.  It is starting to feel that way to Ava…for whatever reason.  So she is taking a break.  At first I was upset.  Cause I want her to succeed!  And because I see so much of myself in her.  And I want her to figure it all out.  And I don’t want her to struggle like me.  But the longer I’ve thought about it and the more I’ve talked to Corey the more I realize it’s ok.  Its ok to live with change.  Its good for Ava at this time.

Live your goals.  I wanted to learn to play the guitar this year.  I have finally started lessons.  It is fun and frustrating at the same time.  I took piano lessons as a kid so I have an understanding of music in general; reading music and all that.  Playing guitar is obviously very different but having that basic knowledge helps.  That said…my fingers are killing me!!!  It hurts to even type!!!

It’s okay to live different aspects of your life as they need living.  Right now my creative juices have taken a little dip…but my kids have been sick and life has gotten “in the way”.  Other things have needed attention and I’ve learned…although this is so difficult for me, I think it’s why it keeps coming up over and over again…that it is ok to have periods of time when I’m not “being creative” and scrapbooking or taking hundreds of photos or designing and creating things in photoshop.  I find it frustrating when going thru it, but I find that when I take a break…even if it’s not planned by me…that when it’s over I end up needing the break and am able to be more creative than if I had just kept going and burned myself out.

And then my last thought about live is stretch yourself a little bit and live your life for growth.  I never want to be stuck in the same place for too long.  I understand stages of life are what they are and sometimes there’s nothing you can do about that.  But there are aspects of my life that I want to be working on and growing with.  One of those that I can control is in the area of scrapbooking…which is one of the reasons I started this blog.  So I was reading Jessica Sprague’s blog recently and she is talking about her upcoming Photo Editing Class.  I was thinking about the questions she was posing in her posts…and this one in particular, “What percentage of photos make it out into the real world and what pics are sort of digital-for-life?”  I admit I am guilty of this.  I do post a fair amount on my blog.  I do put a fair amount together in digital layouts.  BUT the majority of these never make it off the computer or if they do they do not make it into the scrapbook!  Ugh!  So I decided that with an upcoming crop weekend I have in April I’m going to make it a goal of mine to print some of these photos that have been too long on my computer and get them on to layouts and into scrapbooks!!!  I’ve been uploading to Shutterfly and am about ready to place an order.  Yay me!  The entire month of March I intend to spend time everyday planning what I’m going to do for that weekend…if it KILLS me…so that when I get there I know what I’m doing and I’ll get some stuff done!!!

And since I cannot post without a photo…how boring would THAT be…hehe…I’ll answer another one of Jessica’s questions, “What is one of your very FAVORITE photos of a person that you’ve ever taken?”  Mine has got to be this one…

    100_2964

And the reason it is a favorite is because this is what Corey, Ava and Laney look like to me all the time and I can’t believe I caught them all with their natural expressions all at the same time.  Also this photo was in Moab last year on our vacation which we all had an absolute blast on…maybe that’s why the expressions were all so relaxed! ;D

16 years ago Corey and I got married.  In case you were wondering…yes we were young…cause, no, I’m not THAT old! ;D  It has been an amazing ride so far.  Full of the normal ups and downs of life and married life.  I wouldn’t change any of it for a minute and I cannot wait for the next 16!  I love you Honey!

How was your Valentine’s Day?  Ours was good.  It has never really been a huge holiday in our house but this year we all seemed to have gotten something for each other…and so it was fun. ;D

Friday I went in to take photos of Laney’s class party.  The kids were being particularly adorable this day.  All were talking to me…I was talking to them…getting down on their level…they are really used to me now.  They were posing very well and I got some great shots…especially of some kids I don’t normally get good shots of…those particular kids always seem to be moving and I get blurry shots of them.  Not so this time.  I had a good time. So did Laney. ;D
